Earlier this week, I shared with you our Scotland itinerary, what we did, what we saw and what we ate. I’m very excited to share with you Part Two of Discovering Scotland with President’s Choice because it was definitely THE highlight of my Scotland experience! We had the absolute pleasure of going behind-the-scenes to see where President’s Choice makes their “The World’s Best” shortbread. I’m telling you, if I could bottle up the buttery scent of the facility, I totally would. We spent an early morning at Peterhead Fish Market, the largest white fish market in all of Europe, witnessed live auctions of cases and cases of fresh fish and we followed that fish into the factory where they become the delicious PC Scottish Haddock and Cod Fish Cakes that we eat here in Canada!
The Shortbread Experience
Let’s start with the sweets!
You guys know how obsessed I am with desserts so you can only imagine my excitement when we visited this charming little town in Speyside to see how the World’s Best Shortbread is made! This family-run company has been in business since the late 1800’s, using the same recipe since inception, they pride themselves in using simple and only the best ingredients.. and trust me, the proof is in the shortbread!!
With the holidays quickly approaching, President’s Choice has a few delicious tricks up their sleeve! Part of their holiday collection, they’re introducing two new flavours; Shortbread Stars with Cranberry AND Stars with toffee pieces! And seriously, they are addictive!
With the company having been in operation for over a century, there are workers and families who dedicate their lives to making this authentic Scottish cookie that we all enjoy. Walking through the shortbread facility, you can see the love and care that goes into making each product. I still dream of the butter and sugar! It was like the Willy Wonka of shortbread cookies, there were conveyer belts after conveyer belts of cookie dough, baked shortbread, pools of chocolate, it was definitely an experience of a lifetime!
Peterhead Fish Market
Visiting the Peterhead Fish Market was a cool (literally, it was a giant fridge) and unique experience! With this being Europe’s largest white fish market, I expected we would see a lot of fresh fish.. but I didn’t imagine that it would be at THIS scale. The fish market is open 5 days a week bringing in almost 7000 cases of a variety of fresh fish a day! Cod, Haddock, Coley, Saithe, Monkfish.. to name a few! Many fish vendors would come in and partake in the auctions that happen from early morning and end at about noon then close and clean-up ready for the next day’s catch.
Here’s a video of one of the live auctions:
From the fish market, we headed over to the facility where they do the recipe testing and prepared the PC Blue Menu Scottish Haddock Fillets! It was amazing to see how quickly the fish from the market was processed, frozen and shipped over to this facility.
This is also another family-owned company and one of the largest quality seafood manufacturers in Europe. They have always focused on quality, sustainability and are MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) certified.
This was truly an amazing experience to be able to experience first-hand how much love and care goes into President’s Choice products. Thank you so much to President’s Choice for this amazing opportunity to be able to discover the beauty and delicious foods that Scotland has to offer. I loved being able to share my experience with all of you guys and hope you enjoyed Scotland through my lens.
