A RELAXING GIRLS GETAWAY TO BURLINGTON VERMONT

When I travel, I’m always on the hunt for cute, pink places. Always trying to get that cute coffee shot, find that pink house everyone’s been photographing and trying to find the next best thing to eat. Obviously the cuteness and pinkness scale varies depending on who I’m travelling with but it’s no surprise that when Joelle and I are together, you know we’re on the hunt.

When we got invited to travel to Burlington, Vermont with Porter Escapes, of course we were super excited and also had no idea what we would discover. Everyone I spoke to that has visited Burlington, Vermont says that it’s beautiful and that we would love it! This was my first time visiting Vermont and had no idea what or how much to pack. I knew Vermont would be much colder than Toronto so I packed as many sweaters, fleece-lined leggings and lots of fuzzy socks I could fit in my carry-on!

Burlington, Vermont is a great getaway destination if you’re looking to get a break from the busy city life and also a plus if you love to ski! It’s only a one-hour flight from Toronto Billy Bishop Airport into Burlington, Vermont. Vermont is a seasonal destination for Porter Airlines and this year they’re flying from December 21, 2017 to March 27, 2018 every Tuesday and Saturday.

If you follow us on Instagram, you know that Joelle and I headed to snowy Vermont last week. We needed this girls getaway for a little R&R after the busy holidays.

Flying into Vermont, the air is clean, crisp and cold. The drive from Burlington International Airport to Topnotch Resort was a little under an hour. Joelle and I agreed that we would definitely recommend hiring a car service or taxi-ing to your resort. You never know what the weather conditions on the roads would be like. The view a long the way was beautiful. Snow capped mountains and snow covered trees and houses, it was like a winter wonderland.

Topnotch Resort, Stowe, Vermont

My first impression of Topnotch Resort was “wow, this resort is located in the cutest little town!” The view from the resort literally took my breath away. There’s so much open space, surrounded by trees and mountains as far as the eye can see, it’s pretty magical. The photos do it no justice.

The rooms at Topnotch Resort are spacious, the comfiest queen beds, a spacious bathroom and a great view of the mountains.

There are two restaurants located on the resort The Roost, a casual, bar-type restaurant (we ate there way too much, haha) and Flannel, a bistro-style restaurant. We dined at Flannel every morning, ordering a large pot of coffee, orange juice and just took in the view. The breakfast here was delicious! Make sure you try the eggs benny (extra hollandaise for me) and a large stack of blueberry pancakes.

The Spa & Fitness Centre

The spa here is definitely something to write home about. I have never been to a spa let alone get a massage.. until this trip.. and now I am addicted haha. There are so many pools in this resort, you will definitely find one that suits your needs.

  • A massive solarium indoor pool
  • Indoor hot tub with cascading waterfall
  • An outdoor adult pool (open year-round and heated!)
  • An outdoor Jacuzzi (also open year-round and heated)
  • A spacious outdoor family pool with a lap lane (closed during our stay)
  • Fitness Centre (Including aqua aerobics and my fave, yoga!)

Joelle and I booked into an aromatherapy massage and let me tell you, not that I have anything to compare it to, but it was the best massage ever. Topnotch Resort offers over 20 different massage treatments from aromatherapy to Swedish massage to deep tissue massage as well as their Signature Treatments. This spa seriously has it all!

  • 30 quiet treatment rooms including a couples’ suite with fireplace for side-by-side massages
  • Private men’s and women’s spa lounges with fireplaces and complimentary refreshments
  • Co-ed sauna and steam room
  • Changing rooms with private lockers and showers (the changing rooms were impressive!)
  • A full-service salon (hair, nails, waxing.. you name it!)

Other Activities and Amenities

  • Ski and SnowboardStowe Mountain Resort is about a 10 minute drive from Topnotch, they offer complimentary shuttle to and from the ski resort.
  • Skating – There is a skating rink on the property and complimentary skate rentals for resort guests. We are not very good skaters, but it was a lot of fun!
  • Horse sleigh ride – You can take a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the beautiful, snowy countryside.
  • Stowe Village – We are city girls and you know we’re always on the hunt for cute coffeeshops so naturally, we headed into Stowe Village to see what we could find! The village is about a ten minute drive from our resort (Topnotch offers a complimentary shuttle into the village). This town is SO charming, the houses and shops are so cute, I promise you’ll love it.

The Essex Culinary Resort & Spa

I was really excited to stay at the Essex Resort & Spa! After looking up photos and discovering that The Essex is a Culinary Resort, this meant delicious food! The Essex Resort & Spa is about a 20 minute drive from the Burlington Airport. The resort is beautiful and grand yet so peaceful and centres around great, locally sourced food and wellness.

Walking into the resort, you feel like you’re walking into someone’s home. A beautiful open kitchen to the left, a cozy living area with reading chairs around a fire and the scent of freshly baked treats from the front desk/bakery.

Our room at The Essex was extremely spacious with two queen beds and a large living space with a sofa and a nice fireplace to keep us warm! The beds were so comfy, it was a struggle to even leave our room. We even order breakfast-in-bed and enjoyed every second of it. The waffles are definitely a must-try! I’m actually a little sad I agreed to share with Joelle, it was that good! Haha.

There are two restaurants at The Essex Resort & Spa. The Tavern, a pub-style restaurant open all-day serving everything from eggs benny to burgers to pot roast. The Junction is their upscale restaurant, open only in the evenings and offers dishes like braised pork belly and rack of lamb. Both with a focus on locally-sourced food.

The Cook Academy

The Essex Resort is a Culinary Resort, they offer onsite cooking classes where you learn to cook classic meals or desserts depending on the class you enrol in. I was so excited that we got the opportunity to cook and learn with Chef Lisa Ruoff. The class ran for about 3-4 hours, we learned how to make French onion soup (from scratch!), steak with wild mushroom demi-glace, parmesan steak frites (fries are my favourite food), cider brussel sprouts and the creamiest vanilla bean creme brulée. It was the best meal we had in Vermont! The steak was so tender, the frites were double-fried but I didn’t even care and the creme brulée, I’m still dreaming about to this day.

The Essex Spa offers personalized spa services that you can choose and tailor it to your specific needs. Some of the services they offer range from traditional to holistic massages, body or facial treatments and they also offer a full-service salon.

  • 25 foot indoor pool

Joelle and I had an amazing three days in Burlington, Vermont. While we are not ski girls, more aprés-ski ladies, we relaxed, enjoyed the beautiful views and our amazing stay at Topnotch Resort and The Essex Resort & Spa. Everyone was so beyond welcoming and made our stay so memorable, we cant wait to come back to this winter wonderland.
